War and Remembrance
She scribbles on a napkin
And nurses a drink
A distant memory of laughing
And some other things
Traces of moments
Still linger somehow
But she’d rather not
Mention it now
Then her voice trails off into nowhere
As she stares into the past
She talks as if he’s right there
And they begin to laugh
Was a corner of 4th street
And Pendleman Way
The moment was sweet
And it still is today
She saw him fumble for keys
To unlock the door
A crumpled up letter
In a jacket well worn
Their eyes met and it was
Like two cars collide
They spent the next three months
Barely left each others side
It was a hollow victory and
The world seemed destined to end
Tears stained and they remain
On the letters he’d send
As we look back it was only days
Before the fighting would end
That she answered the telephone
And fell to the ground
And traces of moments
Still linger somehow
But she’d rather not
Mention it now...
